Leslie Shaw Park refurbishment beginning thanks to Council President Wesson

Leslie Shaw Park refurbishment beginning

The fencing has gone up yesterday to begin the refurbishment of Leslie Shaw Park.

The park was last refurbished in 1994. In November of 2012, Sandra Pruitt organized a community meeting (announced to members of this Jefferson Park United mailing list) to discuss refurbishing the park, with Mike Shull and Dana Valdez of the Department of Recreation and Parks to listen to the community and to give us their expert advice. Two further meetings were held (announced here and here)  to refine community priorities.

On July 28, 2014 (meeting minutes), Sandra Pruitt organized a committee to begin fund-raising for the park refurbishment.  Sandra Pruitt and Norman Gilmore worked to put together the story of the park at shawpark.org and organize a fund-raising campaign, with the Los Angeles Parks Foundation acting as a fiscal sponsor.

So we were very surprised and relieved when it was announced only a week later at the September 4, 2014 UNNC Governing Board meeting that Council President Wesson had secured one-million dolars in state funds for the refurbishment of the park.

I think it's important to know that our neighborhood became eligible for these state incentive funds because of the new Jefferson Square and Jefferson Park Terrace apartment buildings, which added about 100 units of permanently affordable income qualified housing in our neighborhood.

Both of these buildings received extensive design review by United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council which I believe greatly enhanced the final versions of these new buildings. The fact that this new housing also helped us qualify for park refurbishment funds is a tremendous bonus.

Please visit the Leslie Shaw Park website to see some historical park photos and learn about the park's namesake.
