Update on March 8, 2011 HPOZ Hearing

Dear Neighbors,

Below is a short report on the City hearing last night at 6th Ave. Elementary School about our proposed HPOZ:

1.    Who was there:  Sixty to eighty of our neighbors attended the meeting (a great turn-out!!!), as well as our Neighborhood Council President Stevie Stern and Sylvia Lacey from Councilman Wesson’s office (thank you to both for supporting our efforts).

2.    What was said:  The City representatives gave a short general presentation about HPOZs.  The City reps then asked for statements from the community about the proposed Jefferson Park HPOZ.

They heard many people express STRONG support for the preservation of the cultural, social, and architectural history of Jefferson Park through approval of the proposed HPOZ.

One person spoke that did not support the HPOZ.

There were recommendations for the inclusion of several properties as contributing to the HPOZ that were previously not considered contributing.

A group of us recommended changes to the Draft Preservation Plan that were discussed over the last month during the UNNC Historic Preservation meetings and received unanimous support from our Neighborhood Council.  The recommended changes to the Plan included: A request that the guidelines and interacations with the HPOZ Board focus on preservation education, provide more preservation resources to the community, involve us and the HPOZ Board in a consultation process when projects are proposed, and make the entire process more transparent.

3.    The Response by the City representatives:  They were impressed with our community participation in the HPOZ process and appreciated our efforts to inform them of our support of and hopes for our neighborhood.

4.    Next steps: The recommended changes will be reviewed by the City reps and they will make determinations.

-  We hope that the City reps will promptly return to us with a response to our recommendations in order to rapidly negotiate a final HPOZ Plan.

-  There will be a couple more hearings in the future and I will keep you informed about dates.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR COMMUNITY!
