[NEW DATE] Hearing Notice: June 3, 2014, Expansion of Murphy Oil Site

Update about the May 20 S. LA Planning Commission Hearing and NEW DATE (JUNE 3, 2014) to hear the appeals of the LA City Planning Dept., approval that allows the oil company (FMOG) to expand its operations of the Murphy oil site (Adams and Gramercy next to St. Andrews Apts) into the enclosed "park" at 27th and St. Andrews south of the controlled drill site.

The South LA Planning Commission held a very SHORT meeting (less than 5 minutes) on May 20 with three of five commissioners in attendance (3 is the minimum number of commissioners necessary to hold a legal meeting).  It was announced that one of the three present commissioners (Malcolm Carson) is the Policy Director for the Environmental Health division of CHC (Community Health Council) and CHC submitted a letter supporting our appeals.  As a result, Mr. Carson recused himself due to a conflict of interest.  The Planning Commission was then left without a quorum and the hearing was suspended.   NEW HEARING DATE: The Hearing is now scheduled for... WHEN:   Tuesday, June 3, 2014   WHERE:  LA City Mark Ridley-Thomas Constituent Service Center.                                                                                     8475 S. Vermont Avenue (at 85th Street)   Los Angeles 90044   TIME:      4:30pm    The appeals can be read at the jefferson Park United website:
  • The Planning Dept approval overturned 53+ years of agreed upon precedent ensuring that the park like land fronting 27th & St. Andrews remains green space.
  • The approved expansion is both unjustified and unnecessary as FMOG has indicated in public meetings that the equipment is to replace old equipment located in the controlled drill site.
JOBS & ROYALTIES... Do not be mislead by the FMOG Mailer:

Many of us received a mailer from FMOG trying to scare us.

  • The hearing is about the park and the responsibility of the City to hear the voice of the community and to not just listen to FMOG.
  • The hearing is NOT about oil royalties or whether FMOG can extract oil from the Murphy site!

Please read the appeals and join us Tuesday, June 3 at the hearing.
